The advantages of renewable energy particularly Solar Photovoltaic (PV) systems are increasingly being recognized and embraced by both individuals and businesses. In Namibia, more people and organizations are adopting Solar PV systems, not only as a strategy to manage operating costs but also to produce clean energy that benefits the environment.

As a net importer of electricity, Namibia is vulnerable to external factors that influence energy prices. This dependence limits the country’s control over its energy generation, a significant developmental challenge even after more than three decades of independence. Despite having an abundance of natural resources, Namibia continues to grapple with this issue. Furthermore, global increases in land and ocean temperatures partially driven by power generation from non-renewable sources are contributing to extreme weather events.

Given these challenges, adopting green energy solutions has become a necessity. Installing Solar PV systems is one practical and effective way for both households and businesses to go green. These systems offer users control over their electricity spending, shifting power literally and financially back into their hands. With typical payback periods of under four years for a Grid Tied system and 5 Years for a Hybrid system, Solar PV installations represent a sound investment, leading to long-term savings. Additionally, technological advancements in energy storage and declining costs further enhance the appeal of reducing dependence on expensive and unsustainable energy sources.

Regulators across the SADC region are acknowledging the value of green technologies. Namibia’s Electricity Control Board (ECB) deserves recognition for implementing policies that support renewable energy. A notable example is the enacted Modified Single Buyer (MSB) Model. This framework allows for decentralized electricity generation, enabling private sector participation and encouraging the adoption of environmentally friendly energy solutions at competitive prices.

Local Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) companies like Lights Systems Namibia (LSN) are playing a key role in this transition. LSN has been installing a wide range of grid-connected and Hybrid Solar PV systems for households and businesses across Namibia. These systems vary in size and complexity, yet all deliver meaningful cost savings particularly as electricity prices continue to increase, shortening the payback period for their investments.

LSN’s clients include households, private enterprises, government agencies, and non-governmental organizations. The company has also undertaken projects beyond Namibia’s borders. In addition, LSN provides off-grid solutions to Namibian households and businesses without access to the national grid.

With a strong track record and commitment to sustainability, LSN is poised to continue leading the charge toward a greener future for Namibia.
